Dallas Stars' Win Over Colorado Avalanche Leads To Unique Stanley Cup History

The NHL playoffs have often been described as some of the best in the entire sports world. The pure adrenaline and tense atmosphere in the game of hockey mix well with the intensity of the postseason. So far this postseason, we have seen some incredible performances and we haven't even reached the Conference Finals yet.

Three teams have punched their ticket to the Conference Finals so far, with one series still up in the air. However, with the Dallas Stars eliminating the Colorado Avalanche last night in six games, none of the remaining teams in the playoffs have won a Stanley Cup this century.

The Stars reached the Conference Finals for the second straight season in the Western Conference and will await the winner between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers.

The Canucks lead the series 3-2 right now with Game 6 scheduled for Saturday night in Edmonton. If Vancouver can advance, two of the four teams remaining will be vying for their first-ever title.

Over in the Eastern Conference, the New York Rangers took down the Carolina Hurricanes in six games, while the Florida Panthers outlasted the Boston Bruins in six games as well.

The last time the Rangers won a Stanley Cup was in 1993-94, in the 20th century. Neither Florida nor Vancouver has ever won the Stanley Cup. Edmonton has won five Stanley Cups, coming in 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1987-88, and 1989-90. Dallas has the most recent Stanley Cup win among the teams remaining, having last claimed the Cup it during the 1998-99 season just before the turn of the century.

The league has wanted parity for some time now and this is a great example of that. Having new teams compete for titles each season makes for excellent viewership and keeps the excitement going every year. Interest in hockey has grown over the seasons and with more teams being competitive, it should only continue.

Additionally, the country of Canada hasn't had a team win the Stanley Cup since 1992-93 when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings. While only one of Vancouver or Edmonton will advance to face the Stars, the fate of Canada rests in their hands.

No matter what happens during the rest of the playoffs, history will be made. Two teams have a chance to win their first-ever Stanley Cup, while others can add to their established legacies. We should be in for a good finish to the NHL season with a new team winning for the first time in a while.
