Map Shows Where Campus Protests Have Led to Arrests

Students at universities across the U.S. have established protest camps to demonstrate against the ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza, with more than 2,200 arrests made nationwide as of early Friday, according to a Newsweek review.

The protests, which were initially sparked at Columbia University on April 18, have spread to at least 35 other higher education institutions, according to an analysis by the Associated Press. Protesters are calling for their universities to divest from companies they allege profit from the war, and to be transparent about their investment portfolios, among other demands.

Many of the demonstrations have escalated into significant confrontations with law enforcement, as encampments and the occupation of buildings on school grounds often violate university policies and, sometimes, local laws.

The increase in arrests has attracted significant media coverage and public scrutiny. Some state leaders have criticized university administrations for their handling of the protests, while others have criticized university officials for taking so long to disperse the encampments.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden said that he will not deploy the National Guard to respond to the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses across the United States.
