The 2017 Academy Award nominations are here and there are very few surprises: La La Land led the board with a whopping 14 nominations, followed by Moonlight and Arrival with eight nominations each. Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, appeared in a video streamed Tuesday morning, along with past Oscar winners and nominees, including Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson and Ken Watanabe, to announce the candidates in 24 categories.
La La Land, the movie-musical throwback to the golden days of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, garnered the most nods by far, including for best picture, lead actor and actress, director, screenplay, score and song. Earlier this month, the film also became the biggest winner at the Golden Globes, taking home all seven awards for which it was nominated.
As for the other two critical darlings: Moonlight received eight nods including for best picture, director, screenplay and actor and actress in a supporting role. Arrival, with the same number of nominations, can also be counted among the candidates for best picture, as well as awards for directing and screenplay.
Also in the running for the prestigious best picture award are Manchester by the Sea, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge, which each received six nominations, as well as Fences, Hell or High Water and Hidden Figures.

The nominations are unequivocally more diverse than they were last year, when stars such as Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee boycotted the ceremony in protest and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was revived. In June, Isaacs invited 683 new members into the Academy and into the voting pool as part of an attempt to rectify the glaring lack of diversity. Of these new members whose opinions will now influence the awards, 46 percent are female and 41 percent are non-white. While the list of nominees announced Tuesday marks a significant improvement—with nominations for Barry Jenkins, Ruth Negga, Denzel Washington and several others—the starting point was so dismal as to render it a somewhat inglorious accomplishment overall.
This year's awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be broadcast on ABC at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 26.
