4. The Johns Hopkins Hospital
Baltimore

The teaching arm of the $10 billion integrated health enterprise of Johns Hopkins Medicine, The Johns Hopkins Hospital leads in medical research across fields, including neurosurgery, cardiac surgery and child psychiatry. New research there focuses on blood markers that may be able to identify psychiatric and neurological disorders such as postpartum depression and disease-associated brain declines. They are also investigating the use of artificial intelligence for no-eyedrop ophthalmologic exams to reduce the risk of diabetes-related eye disease in children. Partnering with the university's engineering and physics programs, the Radiology department co-created the Radiology AI Lab (RAIL), which has won awards dating back to 2018. RAIL is used to improve medical screenings, like mammograms, with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Boston

The 1-million-square-foot Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital employs over 2,400 physicians who oversee 51,000 inpatients and perform more than 1.5 million outpatient and emergency room visits annually. The third-oldest hospital in the nation, MGH runs the country's largest hospital-based research program in the U.S., with 9,500 researchers and annual research operations exceeding $1 billion. In 2023, MGH, in a collaboration with MIT, developed "Sybil," an artificial intelligence tool designed to predict lung cancer risk up to six years in the future by using data from low-dose CT scans. Researchers are also studying how to use AI to predict the degeneration of certain cells, which can help allow for noninvasive diagnoses. massgeneral.org
