A pilot and one passenger in a plane died following a civilian plane crash Wednesday at the Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas.
The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. CDT. The vintage warbird craft took off from the station and crashed shortly after, said a release from the station's public affairs office. The plane was civilian-owned and operated, the public affairs officer at the base confirmed to Newsweek.
The crash involved no naval aviators, according to the release, there was no damage to the runways or any of the equipment at the base. The cause of the crash was undetermined Wednesday afternoon. The two civilians had been visiting an employee at the base. The office said it would not release the names of the two until their family members could be contacted.
The base hosted a 5K run for Earth Day Wednesday morning, according to posts on the base's Facebook account.
The base is situated outside of Corpus Cristi, not far from the coastline. It's used for training both Navy and Marine Corps pilots. "NAS Kingsville is one of the Navy's premier locations for jet/strike aviation training," says the base's website. The base covers more than 4,000 acres of land and 36,000 cubic miles of airspace designated for the training of jet/strike pilots, according to the release.
