Alabama Mocked for Not Making College Football Playoff: 'Roll Tears Roll'

College football fans taunted the University of Alabama after it failed to make the College Football Playoff.

The College Football Playoff revealed its seasonal rankings that determine which teams will play in the national championship on Sunday. The University of Georgia, the University of Michigan, Texas Christian University and the Ohio State University are the four teams that made the cut to play in the tournament.

Ohio State eked out the fourth spot over the University of Alabama, which has made the playoff nearly every year since the tournament began in 2014. It was only left out of the playoff in 2019.

University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban said the team is "disappointed" about not making the playoff, according to BamaOnLine.

"We wanted to see our team have an opportunity to play and get in the playoffs," Saban said during an ESPN interview. "But we're gonna get an opportunity to play someone somewhere in a good game, and that's gonna be an opportunity for our players to create value for themselves and show what kind of team we really have."

College football fans reacted to the news on social media, with some of Alabama's rivals mocking them for not making the playoff. Many Twitter users tweeted the phrase "roll tears roll," a play on the team's rallying cry "roll tide."

"I love that Alabama's entire argument was basically 'but we're Alabama' and they expected it to work," tweeted Barstool Sports host Brandon Walker.

"One thing that can bring everyone together is that Alabama didn't make it to the playoff. Let's all just take a moment to appreciate how wonderful that is," tweeted WTOL Sports Director Jordan Strack.

"In all seriousness, the right four teams made the college football playoffs. Alabama needs to come back hungry and focused next year," tweeted Wheaton College professor Esau McCaulley.

Alabama to Face Kansas State in Sugar Bowl

After missing out on the playoff, Alabama will now face Kansas State University in the Sugar Bowl, according to AL.com. The game is set to be held on December 31 in New Orleans.

Alabama has played in 16 Sugar Bowl games in the past, most recently in 2018 when they played against South Carolina's Clemson University, winning 24-6.

The Sugar Bowl is usually played on January 1. However, that date falls on a Sunday this year, so the games usually played on New Year's Day were pushed to January 2, when the national holiday is observed. This would have caused a conflict between the Sugar Bowl and a Monday night NFL game, so the Sugar Bowl was instead moved to New Year's Eve, according to the Associated Press.

The Sugar Bowl was last played on December 31, 1995, when Virginia Tech defeated The University of Texas, the AP reported.
