Alicia Silverstone saw playing Cher in Clueless as a challenge, she said on Late Night with Seth Meyers Monday.
The actor explained she "didn't have any fashion sense at all" and "didn't think [she] was funny" when she auditioned for the role in the 1995 film. "At that time, I had a pair of jeans and a green T-shirt I wore to every audition I went on. It was the only thing I really ever wore. It had a little pocket on it," she told host Seth Meyers. "This was a different kind of person for me, this materialistic girl."
She liked the character and had no idea the movie would become as successful as it did. While she took home some costumes, she admitted they didn't "really quite work" outside of the film.
Silverstone also stopped by HQ Trivia, the daily trivia game show, and channeled her Clueless character Monday. One of the questions was, "The '90s comedy Clueless is responsible for what iconic line?" After host Scott Rogowsky revealed the answer ("As if!"), she reacted to those who got it wrong like Cher would have: "That's way harsh, Tai." She also promoted her new series, American Woman on Paramount Network. She plays Bonnie Nolan in the show inspired by co-executive producer Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills).
"It was a really juicy part," Silverstone told Meyers about Bonnie. "In the first episode, she finds out her husband is cheating on her and she goes ballistic and pulls a knife. She's not your typical '70s housewife."
The late-night talk show host also asked the actor about her experience seeing Hamilton recently. She'd seen it with the original cast and went again to support Daniel Breaker, who is playing Aaron Burr. She and Breaker were in a Broadway play, The Performers, together.
"He just comes alive in the most incredible way" during the song, "The Room Where It Happens," Silverstone said to Meyers. "At the end, everyone's clapping and I start screaming. All of a sudden, I screamed, 'f*** yeah,' which is not appropriate. But it felt right. It had to happen. I felt like I went to church at that moment."
The actor said Breaker knew it was her but the other cast members didn't. She had expected those sitting around her to react, but no one did.
American Woman airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on Paramount Network.
