Alyssa Milano Blasted on Social Media For Calling a 'Sex Strike' to Protest Abortion Laws

While some states are making it tougher, and almost impossible, to perform abortions, actress Alyssa Milano called upon her 3 million Twitter followers to abstain from sex in her new hashtag, #SexStrike.

"Our reproductive rights are being erased," Milano wrote Friday night. "Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I'm calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on."

Milano has posted several times about the issue, and this was her initial post.

Our reproductive rights are being erased.

Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy.

The sex-strike protest comes on the heels of Georgia's new anti-abortion law. Though many of Milano's followers agreed with her sex strike, an overwhelming amount of her followers said no such protest will work.

Twitter user Kayla Tucker said "A hill I will die on: As an extremely prochoice woman, I think a #SexStrike for abortion rights solves nothing. The women who would withhold sex likely have partners who are prochoice. The people who are making, passing, supporting these bills likely have antichoice partners."

Madamchef, who claims to be an independent who married a liberal, told any women who participated in the sex strike to unfollow her.

Is there any woman who is actually going to participate in the #SexStrike?
Please unfollow me...

Mister Higgins poked fun at a sex-strike, saying the last time this kind of protest happened was during the Prohibition era.

The last time I recall there was any sort of #SexStrike the 18th amendment happened. pic.twitter.com/8bwY89yixL

Bridget from Boston said she's already been on a sex-strike for "decades."

"I was on a #SexStrike for decades, referred to as "Don't sleep with a man who isn't married to you and don't date any dude who would want you to kill your child."

Let me see if I have this right, sex strike=fewer unwanted pregnancies=no need to give Planned Parenthood taxpayer money. Am I doing this right? #SexStrike

Though other states have passed similar laws, it was the Georgia bill this week signed by Governor Brian Kemp—the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act—that set Milano off Friday. The so-called "Fetal Heartbeat" bill, set to go in effect in January 2020, will ban women from having abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected. Heartbeats are often detected in embryos within five or six weeks upon conception, most times before a woman knows she's pregnant.

Milano has been an outspoken celebrity when it comes to women's rights, and has written posts against President Donald Trump on abortion, including this from two weeks ago.

"We must continue to call out these lies. This is going to be his and the @GOP strategy going into the election. He will paint the left as, "baby killers who want open borders and want to take away your guns.

"As he's proven in the past, the only way for him to win is by lying."
