Manhunt Underway for Suspect in Detroit Amber Alert Investigation

A manhunt is underway for a suspect after a 3-year-old girl was found on Sunday after authorities issued an Amber Alert.

Michigan State Police issued an Amber Alert for Kemahanni King early on Sunday morning after the car she was in was stolen in Detroit, Michigan.

Authorities said the girl had last been seen inside a 2006 Black Chrysler 300 with a Michigan license plate reading EQQ 8148, which was stolen from the 15400 block of Schoolcraft Road on Detroit's west side at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday.

In an update on Sunday, the Detroit Police Department said King had been found alive and is being checked by medical personnel.

"We appreciate the community's assistance, media partners and everyone who has shared this post, including our law enforcement partners," the department said in a post on Facebook. "The investigation continues and will be handled by our Organized Crime division."

The Amber Alert System provides law enforcement nationwide the ability to notify the public of missing children who are believed to have been abducted.

Amber stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was murdered in January 1996 after being kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas.

There are 82 Amber Alert plans throughout the country, according to the system's website. As of December 31, 2023, 1,186 children have been successfully recovered through the Amber Alert system, the website states.

Michigan's Amber Alert can be activated by local law enforcement agencies investigating the case of an abducted child through a request to the Michigan State Police.

The alert can be requested when law enforcement officials believe that a child under 18 has been abducted and is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.

If the alert is activated, state police issue the Amber Alert to radio and television stations via the Emergency Alert System. It interrupts broadcasting to supply information about the abducted child. A Wireless Emergency Alert will also be issued to alert mobile devices in a desired geographic region about the Amber Alert.
