UPDATE: 4:50 p.m. EDT— The lockdown at American University has been completely lifted, campus police announced. "All buildings and grounds are now deemed secure. Lockdown released. University is returning to normal operations," AU Police tweeted.

UPDATE: 4:02 p.m. EDT— American University Police has lifted lockdown notices for the Spring Valley Building on 4801 Massachusetts Avenue, the building at 4200 Wisconsin Avenue as well as lockdown at the Washington College of Law and Tenley Campus. The lockdown remains in effect at the Main Campus and East Campus.

UPDATE: 2:55 p.m. EDT— American University Police announced on Twitter that the lockdown on 4401 Connecticut Avenue has been lifted. Campus police said the lockdown lift only pertained to the one building and that all other buildings remain on lockdown. AU Police also said that the Secret Service had joined the building by building search.

UPDATE: 2:25 p.m. EDT— American University Police and Metropolitan Police are conducting a building-by-building search of the camput after reports of an armed intruder, campus police said. Those on campus were asked to continue to shelter in place as the lockdown continues. AU Police said the campus road is closed.

Original story: Authorities are responding to reports of an "armed intruder" near American University's campus on Wednesday.

The university, based in Washington, D.C., sent an alert to those on campus, urging them to lock doors if inside or to leave campus if outside.

"Reports of armed intruder near campus. Lock doors & stay away from windows-If outside, leave campus immediately- Police responding. More info to follow," American University Police tweeted.

Authorities told WJLA-TV that they received a call about a "person with a gun on their hip" on Nebraska Avenue and New Mexico Avenue NW. AU Police said the investigation was focused on the university's Main Campus, East Campus and 3201 New Mexico Avenue. "Shuttle ops are suspended. Continue to shelter in place," campus police tweeted.
