Angelina Jolie Claims Brad Pitt's Abuse Started Earlier Than Originally Thought

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Angelina Jolie is claiming that her ex-husband Brad Pitt's physical abuse towards her "started well before" the 2016 plane incident that resulted in her filing for divorce.

Despite finalizing their divorce in 2019, complications have arisen regarding the sale of their Chateau Miraval French winery. Jolie's legal team has attempted to unveil communications demonstrating Pitt's alleged obstruction, insisting that he refused to permit his ex-wife to sell her stake in the winery without her agreeing to sign an "onerous" and "expensive" NDA.

"While Pitt's history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family's September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles, this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well. Jolie then immediately left him," the document read, obtained by Page Six.

This incident refers to the time when Jolie claims that Pitt "choked one of the children and struck another in the face" and "grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her."

According to the recent filing, the NDA Pitt presented to Jolie would encompass his "personal misconduct, whether related to Miraval or not," seemingly in a bid to silence her from disclosing his alleged persistent abuse.

Jolie's legal team further disclosed that Pitt wanted her to "contractually bind herself" to silence after learning in 2021 that she had submitted a sealed filing containing "emails, summaries of the family's expected testimony, and other evidence" aimed at settling their child custody dispute.

At the time, Pitt agreed to purchase Jolie's shares of the French winery but allegedly backed out as he feared his ex's sealed documents "could eventually become public," the documents continue.

"Mr. Pitt refused to purchase Ms. Jolie's interest when she would not be silenced by his NDA," Jolie's attorney Paul Murphy told Page Six.

"By refusing to buy her interest but then suing her, Mr. Pitt put directly at issue why that NDA was so important to him and what he hoped it would bury: his abuse of Ms. Jolie and their family," he continued, referencing Pitt's 2022 lawsuit against Jolie for selling her shares of the winery to another party.

Pitt has not yet responded to these claims.

The couple first crossed paths on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2004, tying the knot in 2014. They share six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Vivienne and Knox.
