Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell's Death Sparks Outpouring of Support

Anna 'Chickadee' Cardwell, reality star and elder sister of Alana 'Honey Boo Boo' Thompson, has died aged 29.

Cardwell was diagnosed with adrenal carcinoma ten months ago. She is survived by boyfriend Eldridge Toney, and her daughters Kaitlyn Elizabeth, 11, and Kylee Madison, eight.

Cardwell was the oldest daughter of June Shannon, aka Mama June, who rose to fame in the reality TV series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The family secured their own reality show and a number of spin-offs thanks to Thompson's breakout turn in Toddlers and Tiaras.

Shannon announced Cardwell's death on Instagram and asked for prayers.

"With the breaking heart, we are announcing that @annamarie35 is no longer with us. She passed away in my home last night peacefully at 11:12 PM," Shannon wrote.

"She gave one hell of a fight for 10 months she passed away with her family around her like she won't and we will will be updating y'all with more information as we get it today. We love y'all and continued prayers and thoughts for our family doing this difficult time."

Fans shared their grief and sent Shannon messages of support on her Instagram post.

"Most of us watched Anna grow watching Here comes honey boo boo.. I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a child is the worst thing anyone could ever go through. ❤️ June we all love you and your crew. Rest In Peace Anna," wrote one person in the comments.

Another added: "Rest in peace dear Chickadee. May God hold you in His glory. I am praying for the family. You are all in my heart."

And a third wrote: "My condolences...so sorry for your loss June."

Cardwell was diagnosed with the aggressive cancer in January after complaining of stomach pains. She underwent a series of tests and doctors found the cancer had spread to her liver, kidneys and lungs.

She updated fans in May about chemotherapy, telling them it was a rollercoaster experience.

"This [was] yesterday," Cardwell wrote alongside a photo of herself and Toney on Instagram in May. "It was pretty good day but did get a little and Cracker Barrel was good going down but not up 😂 but over all it's going good and chemo is working we come to find so things are looking good."

Shannon and Cardwell reconciled when she was diagnosed with cancer after many years of being estranged.

She moved in with her grandmother in 2003 and out of Shannon's home before moving back in 2012 ahead of the filming for Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

But that show was canceled when TLC learned Shannon had rekindled her relationship with former boyfriend and convicted sex offender Mark McDaniel.

After the show's cancellation, Cardwell revealed McDaniel had molested her when she was eight years old, while he was dating her mom.

Cardwell also sued her mom in 2015 for unpaid appearances on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Shannon has long had a strained relationship with all her daughters. Thompson moved in with older sister Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird as her mom's drug use got more out of control, with the reality star admitting to spending $250,000 per month on narcotics.

"Alana seems a lot better being raised by Pumpkin," Cardwell told The U.S. Sun at the time.

"Pumpkin's got it all, she's got it. She has a good head on her shoulder. Alana is a lot more mature. Pumpkin makes sure everybody has all their stuff together."

Cardwell added: "I'm proud that Pumpkin stepped up with Alana, and how she's growing up."

But the pair reconciled following Cardwell's diagnosis and all four of Shannon's daughters attended her wedding to Michael Stroud earlier this year. She is also mom to Jessica 'Chubbs' Shannon, 26.

Shannon revealed it was the first time her family had been together for the first time in almost 10 years.

"This was the first time the family had all been together since 2014," Shannon told People. "So it was really special to get married in a place where my family and I have had so many memories!"
