Ariana Grande Said She'd Marry Pete Davidson Before They Were Even Friends

Ariana Grande knew she'd marry Pete Davidson when they met on Saturday Night Live in 2016, she revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday.

"We met on SNL, two, three years ago," she said. "We weren't even friends for the longest time, but I had the biggest crush in the whole world on him the whole time. My friends used to make fun of me for it. …I'm not a crushy person. I don't have crushes on people I don't know." After they worked on skits together, she told her tour manager, "I'm marrying him, 100 percent."

Fallon had a listening party for Grande's new album, Sweetener, which includes the song "Pete Davidson." She wrote it "a week after [they] started hanging out," she told the late-night talk show host. "I just made it, and I sent it to him. I didn't know what to call it, so I called it 'Pete.' … It was either going to be that or 'This Is About Pete Davidson.' Why not? Be direct." "Pete" was the song's original title, but the singer explained why she changed it on Twitter in July. "i [sic] like the way it looks. i love his name and i love him," she wrote. "Music lasts forever. it'll [sic] outlive any tattoo, any memory, any anything, even myself, so i want my love for him and how i feel to be a part of that."

Fallon also played some of "Breathin." "It's about anxiety. You know when you feel like you can't get a full breath? It's the worst feeling in the whole world," she told him. "It's a song about that feeling."

Grande also spoke with Fallon about the MTV Video Music Awards and her single, "God Is a Woman," from Sweetener. She's nominated for five awards and will be performing the single at the ceremony Monday. Madonna is the voice of God in the "God Is a Woman" music video. "I texted her," she said. "Without Madonna, I wouldn't be able to make a song like that. She paved the way for all of us, and has been here fighting that fight way longer than any of us."

The singer started her appearance on The Tonight Show with a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died from pancreatic cancer Thursday. "She was so sweet, and she was so cute," she said about Franklin. "It's an honor to have met her." She also revealed Franklin called her once to ask if a relative (Grande couldn't remember if it was her nephew or grandson) could send her some music. "I'd be honored to listen," Grande recalled telling Franklin. "Text me the mp3." Franklin didn't know how to do that, so Grande received a CD in the mail months later.
