The son of a Republican Arkansas congressman, Steve Womack, has been arrested on multiple gun and drugs charges, according to reports.
Citing jail records, FOX16 reported that James P. Womack, 31, faces charges including possession of methamphetamine or cocaine with intent to deliver, possession of firearms by certain persons and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.
According to the records, a tip off led police to WoodSpring Suites, where James Womack was hiding out in a red truck with a camper shell on it.
"Womack was a parolee who was showing to be an absconder with warrants for his arrest," the affidavit states. He is being held without bond.
According to 40/29 TV, Womack initially gave a false name when confronted by police. Officers found a gun, methamphetamine, and marijuana smoking paraphernalia in the pickup.
Representative Steve Womack, who represents northwest Arkansas' 3rd congressional district, released a statement following his son's arrest.
"Like so many families across this nation, our family has been dealing with a loved one's addiction. The most recent arrest of our son adds to that pain. We love him unconditionally; however, as an adult, he is accountable for the choices's he's made," he wrote.
"We honor and respect the criminal justice system that will decide his fate. I truly regret that he has put himself and his family in this difficult situation. Nothing is more devastating than to see a loved one struggle with addiction. It is the hardest thing I've ever faced, and I know we are not alone. Addiction is eating away at the soul of our country. This is a very difficult time for our family – we ask simply for your prayers," wrote Representative Womack.
The Arkansas Times reported that in 2010 James Womack reached a plea bargain agreement in a methamphetamine case, with critics alleging special treatment when he was released 105 days into a 10 year sentence after spending time in a boot camp.
According to the NorthwestArkansas Democrat Gazette, he was arrested for parole violation in 2011 and 2012.
