People in Washington, D.C., woke up to find snow on the ground just in time for their morning commutes. It was the most recent city to see the snow and wintery weather from winter storm Avery that's making its way from the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic and the northeast on Thursday and into the evening.
The wintry mix of snow and icy rain was expected to travel North through Thursday and bring the first snow to many places along the eastern seaboard. In some areas, there was as little as an inch or less of snow expected to fall total. In other areas, though the snow was expected to accumulate up to eight to 12 inches in some places. Much of Maine was expected to see anywhere from four to 12 inches of snow as were parts of New York State and Pennsylvania.
In New York City and Philadelphia, the snow wasn't expected to accumulate. Only an inch or two of snow was likely to fall and stick there between Wednesday and Saturday the forecast from the National Weather Service showed.

There were winter storm warnings and watches issued for Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine on Thursday. There were also Winter Weather Advisories widespread across the states as well.
The snow was expected to move along the I-95 corridor on Thursday from Washington D.C., up to Boston. It was expected to start as snow and then change to freezing rain or ice. From New York City up to Boston the commute was expected to be messy in the evening and those driving should do so with caution.
As the first winter storm of the year that was set to impact a huge portion of the country, The Weather Channel went ahead and named the storm Winter Storm Avery, the first name off of the list of names of the 2018-2019 winter snow season.
More snow was expected in the northern tier of the country and the upper Midwest thanks to cold fronts coming from Canada and bringing cold weather and precipitation. That system was expected to travel from the Northern Rockies to the Northern Plains and then the Central Rockies and Plains from there, according to the NWS.
Some schools were issuing early dismissals for students where the snow was expected to impact bus routes home. Those dismissals were happening across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and a few other states.
