Confirming his transfer to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire via a Twitter video on Tuesday morning, Bastian Schweinsteiger expressed regret at having not "done more" for Manchester United.

FIFA World Cup winner Schweinsteiger, 32, was one of former United manager Louis Van Gaal's highest-profile signings in the summer of 2015, joining from Bayern Munich.

The Germany international featured in 18 English Premier League games in his first season, but he fell out of favor when José Mourinho replaced Van Gaal in May 2016.

Schweinsteiger trained with United's reserve squad at the start of this season, and although his appearances in cup competitions have continued to be cheered by United fans, he has not made a Premier League appearance in 2016-17.

"Dear fans of Manchester United, I have decided to make a permanent move to Chicago Fire," Schweinsteiger said in a video posted to his Twitter account.

"I really wish that I could have done more for you, but it was time for me to make a change. Thank you especially for your amazing support during my time at the club. I will never forget it."

After three games of the new MLS season, Chicago Fire is seventh on four points.
