Bebe Rexha is speaking out. The pop songstress called out designers on Monday for refusing to dress her for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on February 10.
The 29-year-old "Meant to Be" singer, who earned her first Grammy nomination in December, posted a video on Instagram about the matter at hand. She explained how her team reached out to multiple designers, but they rejected the opportunity to create a custom red carpet outfit for her because she's "too big." She elaborated on the issue further in the post's caption.
"If you don't like my fashion style or my music that's one thing. But don't say you can't dress someone that isn't a runway size," Rexha wrote. "Empower women to love their bodies instead of making girls and women feel less than by their size. We are beautiful any size! Small or large! Anddddd My size 8 ass is still going to the Grammys."
Rexha is far from being the first star to encounter such a predicament. With this in mind, here's a list of five other female celebrities who've faced issues of this caliber with designers:
Megan Mullally
Megan Mullally is set to host the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. While she'll be wearing a custom look from Christian Siriano, she revealed in December how she struggled to find someone to design an outfit for her. "Looks like I will be buying my dress online though, as per my usual...Designers do not send me dresses," she wrote via Instagram.
Leslie Jones
When starring in 2016's Ghostbusters, Leslie Jones opened up about how no designers were willing to dress her for her own movie premiere. "It's so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for [the] movie. Hmmm that will change and I remember everything," she tweeted. Soriano stepped in to help shortly after this tweet was posted.
Melissa McCarthy
It's no secret Melissa McCarthy is an A-list talent, but even A-listers—no matter what size they are—struggle to find clothing for important affairs. She confronted this issue via Redbook in 2014 by explaining why she launched plus-size line Seven7, saying: "Two Oscars ago, I couldn't find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers—very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people—and they all said no."
Beyoncé
Beyoncé is an icon within fashion and music, so it may come as a surprise to the Bey Hive that she had issues being styled by designers due to her size. She disclosed this revelation in a speech at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards in 2016, saying: "Starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels didn't really want to dress four black, country, curvy girls, and we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture...My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes."
Bryce Dallas Howard
When attending the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, actress Bryce Dallas Howard—filmmaker Ron Howard's own daughter—admitted to E!'s Giuliana Rancic that she purchased her own gown for the prestigious ceremony. "I like having lots of options for a size six as opposed to maybe one option. So I always go to department stores for this kind of stuff," she said.
