Update | The ink's not even dry on 2017 yet, but it's never too early to start game planning your adventures to the multiplex in the coming year. And there's going to be a lot to see.
Oscar contenders like Phantom Thread, The Post and I, Tonya open nationwide in the first days of 2018. Those are followed in January and February by a new Liam Neeson thriller (The Commuter), a new Clint Eastwood film (The 15:17 to Paris) and the final film (please be the final film) in the Fifty Shades series, Fifty Shades Freed.
The early months of the year are usually where studios dump films they expect not to bring in audiences. But in the coming year, that script is flipped in a big way. Marvel's Black Panther opens in February, while Ava DuVernay's epic adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's classic A Wrinkle in Time hits theaters in March. And the spectacles just keep coming from there: Tomb Raider, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Ready Player One, The Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2, The Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Mission: Impossible 6, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Aquaman and the Transformers spinoff Bumblee just to name a few.
If you hate sequels, prequels, remakes or tentpole franchises, it'll be OK. Some of cinema's finest auteurs have new films in 2018. Wes Anderson's latest, the animated Isle of Dogs, is scheduled for March. Terrence Malick's latest, the historical drama Radegund, doesn't have a release date yet, nor does Terry Gilliam's long-in-development-hell The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, but they're both due out in the new year. (Side recommendation: Watch the documentary Lost in La Mancha before seeing Quixote to fully appreciate what it took to get the movie to theaters.)
There'a a lot coming down the pike in 2018, and to help you prepare we've gathered as comprehensive a listing of release dates as possible—more than 175 movies! Studio schedules shift and films get moved around, so be sure to check your local listings before heading to the cinema.
