SoHo may be known for its fashionable boutiques and stunning cast-iron architecture, but this cobblestoned swath of southern Manhattan has quietly become a great center for small hotels. Even better, visitors are just steps away from wonderful restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and clothes shops. Here are the best places to lay your head in SoHo.
1. 11 Howard
Arguably the chicest property in the neighborhood, 11 Howard features minimalist designed rooms bedecked with custom made Danish-inspired furniture. The in-house Gallic restaurant, Le Coucou, has been one of the buzziest eateries in the city since it first fired up its burners in 2016. The hotel donates a portion of their profits to Global Citizen, a non-profit social action organization.
This SoHo stunner is a true boutique hotel. The 14 sound-proof rooms boast rain shower heads, complimentary VOSS water, chocolate, and seasonal fruits, iPad hotel directory, and complimentary suit press, shirt ironing, and shoe shine. The open-air Moroccan-tiled courtyard is a tranquil spot to sip coffee in the morning.
3. Hugo Hotel
Designed by Italian architect Marcello Pozzi, the sleek Hugo sits in western SoHo, a couple of blocks from the Hudson River. The downside is that there aren't as many off-site amenities in this part of SoHo (in terms of nearby restaurants and shops). The upside is that the in-house eatery, MAV SOHO serves up excellent creative Italian fare and the rooftop bar, Azul, offers jaw-dropping views. The stylish wood-floored rooms make you want to stay in a bit longer.
4. The James
The stylish, vaguely retro James offers some nice perks, including a free car service (when available) and a nightly complimentary wine and cheese reception for guests. Rooms boast reclaimed wood floors, bathroom floor heating, an eco-friendly pillow menu, Bluetooth-enabled speakers, and complimentary triple-distilled water and chocolates. The in-house restaurant by celebrity chef David Burke is worth the nosh and the rooftop bar offers stunning 360-degree views.
5. The Mercer
The 75 loft-like rooms (with 11-foot ceilings) at this longtime SoHo spot give guests the feeling their living in a downtown artist loft – albeit with 24-hour room service, an in-house Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, free day passes to posh Equinox gym, and plenty of celebrity sightings.
6. NoMo SoHo
With a chic, yet leafy design inspired by the Jean Cocteau film "La Belle et le Bete," NoMo's rooms offer all the usual amenities – iPads, flat-screen TVs, free WiFi, and floor-to-ceiling windows for incredible views. But the hotel does something else that's quite unique: guests get access to a complimentary smart phone during their stay; so, if you're from another country and can't use your phone while in New York, take advantage of NoMo's phone perk.
The location in Soho – steps from the boutiques of NoLIta, the restaurants of Chinatown – make up for the small size of the 42 black-and-white-clad rooms at Solita.
