The BET Awards 2022 took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 26, celebrating Black talent in music, acting, sports and culture over the past year.
It was a night of entertainment you didn't want to miss, with Lizzo opening the ceremony with a dazzling performance of her latest single, "About Damn Time," featuring a flute solo as well as other impressive performances from Jack Harlow and Chance the Rapper.
The ceremony was hosted by Oscar-nominated actor Taraji P. Henson for the second year running and some big names joined her on stage to present awards, including Keke Palmer, Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, Big Freedia and Janelle Monae.
Doja Cat led the nominations with six in total, followed closely by Drake and Ari Lennox with four, but unfortunately, they took no trophies home between them.
On the other hand, it was a great night for Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak who took home the prize for Album of the Year for An Evening With Silk Sonic. P. Diddy was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award and to hand it to him was Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), who gave a surprise speech honoring the rapper.
It was also a good night for Jazmine Sullivan and The Weeknd, who won Best Female and Best Male R&B/pop artist, respectively.
Megan Thee Stallion, who missed the ceremony as she was performing at Glastonbury in the U.K., won the BET Award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Kendrick Lamar, who just happened to be headlining Glastonbury Festival on the same day, took home the award for Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
Almost three months after his infamous Oscar incident, Will Smith was once again recognized for his performance in King Richard, the biopic about Richard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams. The movie won Best Movie and Smith was awarded Best Actor.
Zendaya, won the BET Award for Best Actress for her performance as Rue Bennett in Euphoria and MJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
