Billie Eilish Golden Globes Outfit Mocked

Billie Eilish became a talking point on social media on Sunday, when she stepped out in eye-catching style for a triumphant night at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.

Alongside her brother, Finneas O'Connell, the singer-songwriter clinched the best original song trophy for the Barbie track "What Was I Made For?" at the star-studded ceremony, which was held at Beverly Hills' Beverly Hilton.

However, Eilish had already captured attention through her Willy Chavarria ensemble that was reminiscent of a school uniform. The star stepped out in a boxy, oversized black blazer, which she teamed with a beige pleated skirt.

Complementing her look with a light blue striped Peter Pan collar shirt, to which was added a black ribbon, Eilish rounded out her look with black Mary Jane heels and Anita Jo jewelry.

As she hit the red carpet at the event, Eilish explained that her shoes were thrifted, and the ribbon she wore as an accessory was received as part of a birthday gift. She told Entertainment Tonight of her beige skirt: "I just like that it looks like shorts, but it's a skirt."

However, Eilish's attire divided fans when images of her clothing arrived on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

"What the f*** is Billie Eilish wearing?!" one viewer exclaimed.

"Billie Eilish wearing an excellent David Byrne cosplay," wrote another, who included a GIF of Byrne in the large suit he wore on the Talking Heads 1983 tour and the 1984 acclaimed documentary Stop Making Sense.

"Billie Eilish wearing an NBA suit from 2002," quipped another viewer.

"Ok. Listen. I love Billie Eilish. I'm glad #Barbie won something. Best song is something," began one X user. "But. GURL. Sigh. WUT are you wearing. Yikes. Joan [Rivers] would have had a friggin field day on her."

"I GET IT that Billie doesn't want to flaunt her sexuality or whatever," they continued. "But JEEZ girl. You are a bona fide star, wear some sparkly or SUMTHIN."

"Billie Eilish what are you wearing?" another asked.

While there were several detractors, a number of others expressed admiration for Eilish's look, including one fan who wrote that "2024 is not disappointing so far. [...] Billie Eilish advances her best dressin' era with a sublime Willy Chavarria moment."

"Billie Eilish had my favorite outfit I think," commented another after watching the celebrities walk the expansive red carpet at the hot ticket event.

"Billie Eilish, who explained she is wearing an outfit that is partly thrifted and the ribbon she's wearing was pulled off a gift someone gave her," said another, who added a raised hands emoji to show their appreciation of the look.

While her ensemble may have divided opinion, Eilish had an undeniably triumphant night when she picked up another Golden Globe for her Barbie track "What Was I Made For?" In 2022, Eilish and her brother won in the same category for their track "No Time to Die," penned for the James Bond movie of the same name.

Taking to the stage alongside O'Connell to accept her award on Sunday, Eilish said: "It was exactly a year ago almost that we were shown the movie and I was very, very miserable and depressed at the time and writing that song kind of saved me a little bit.

"A year later and here we are and it's really surreal. I feel incredibly, incredibly lucky. Incredibly lucky and grateful and you guys scare the living hell out of me—everyone in this room—but thank you so much. Thank you, this means the world."
