Netflix's Bird Box is one of the streaming service's biggest hits of 2018 including a reported 45 million people watching the horror film in its first week. However, one of the biggest mysteries revolves around the movie's monsters and what they actually look like.
While they were never shown, one of the special effects artist behind Bird Box showed off what could have been.
As first reported by The Wrap, designer and sculpture artist Andy Bergholtz - who also worked on A Quiet Place - took to Instagram on Saturday to reveal some of the designs used for the Bird Box monster, or what one of them would have looked like. To understand, you'll have to have watched the film so spoiler alert for those that haven't seen it yet. The following will reveal events of the film.
In Bird Box, there is something that's affecting people's minds causing them to commit suicide when they lay eyes on it. This "something" seems to be an entity or monster that has come to Earth.
Each person affected seemingly sees something different, as Bergholtz explains this version of the Bird Box monster is specific to Sandra Bullock's character.
"We had the unique pleasure of designing a creepy makeup for the film, although the scene ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor," Bergholtz wrote. "Keep in mind, the fatal "vision" that each character saw would most likely be different for each person (you'll understand if you've seen the film), and this makeup appeared in a cut 'dream/nightmare sequence' with Sandra Bullock's character.
Considering her pregnant state and emotional arc thru the movie, the producers felt Sandra's nightmare would have something to do with a twisted, demonic baby creature attacking her (that's as much as I could gather about the context of the scene anyway). I sculpted at least 3 or 4 variations on the design before it was approved, which began as a more aggressive, monstery look and was revised to be a bit more subtle in the end."
Bergholtz continues by saying that Bullock said in an interview that she saw a "snake-like" green man with a horrific baby face on-set. The artist clarifies saying that the "snake" part is just someone in a green suit where CGI would be implemented later.
While Bergholtz's pictures give Bird Box fans a possible look for the monsters, it seems that whatever the creatures are can shape-shift into something more personal so there isn't a definitive look for them.
Bird Box is currently streaming on Netflix.
