Blade Runner Murderer Oscar Pistorius Injured in Prison Brawl

Oscar Pistorius, the convicted murderer who won multiple Paralympic gold medals as a double amputee, was injured in a prison fight in South Africa, according to reports Tuesday morning.

Pistorius, 31, became known as the "Blade Runner" for his prosthetic limbs during a professional sprinting career that saw him become an Olympic champion on six different occasions.

Pistorius's career ended when he was found guilty of murdering Reeva Steenkamp, a model and his girlfriend, in December 2015, after South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal overturned a previous conviction of culpable homicide. Pistorius, who was born without fibulae, had his sentence increased from six years to 13 years and five months in November of this year.

Pistorius is serving his sentence at Atteridgeville Correctional Facility near Pretoria, South Africa's executive capital. He was moved to the facility, which houses inmates with physical disabilities, in November 2016. It was there on December 6 that Pistorius is said to have injured his hand in a fight with another inmate.

Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the facility, said in quotes reported by The Guardian: "Oscar Pistorius sustained a bruise following an alleged incident with another inmate over the use of a public phone in the special care unit where both offenders are detained at Atteridgeville correctional centre."

The Guardian also cited unconfirmed reports that other prisoners inside the facility had become angry when Pistorius took too long on the phone.

The Johannesburg-based news site Eyewitness News reported that Pistorius was taken for a medical checkup but was found to have nothing more serious than a bruise. South Africa's Correctional Services Department will investigate the incident, the news site also reported.
