How Blush Can Completely Change Your Face Shape

I'm a blush girl through and through—it's a product I never leave the house without and plays a key role in making me look fresh and alive.

Makeup is an amazing tool to play with your face shape and structure depending on where you place and how you blend it, and blush is one of the most versatile products for trying this out for yourself.

Despite blush being a great tool for playing with bone structure, placing it in the wrong position could lead to your face appearing fuller, wider, or rounder—something many try to avoid.

A recent viral video, shared to TikTok by makeup artist Elena Rachitskaya, showed exactly how blush can change your face shape by demonstrating five different application techniques.

I decided to check makeup “blush” trend. As a makeup artist i have no idea why n.4 hack is working. What do you think? And which one would you prefer more?) ♥️ #blushhack #blush #blushing #blushtrend #blushtutorial #makeuptips

How to use blush to change your face shape

Using Blush to Change Face Shape
The placement of your blush can create illusions of higher cheekbones, a more lifted face, and a sun kissed look. Newsweek's Lollie Hancock tested five different blush placements to see how it affected her face...

Blush to lift your face vs. blush to shorten your face.

Blush Placement - Lift or Shorten
To lift the face, left, apply blush to the high points. For a shortened effect, right, concentrate the product on the apples of the cheek.

The first side-by-side makeup comparison showed the difference between placement to both lift and shorten the face.

To lift, Rachitskaya applied the blush on top of the cheek bone towards the edge of her face, focusing on the high points, whereas for the other side she placed the product more centrally and lower, onto the apple of her cheek.

The lifted side made my face appear more slender, whilst the shortened side made my cheeks appear rounder and fuller.

Blush to enhance cheekbones vs. blush to add fullness.

Blush Placement - Enhance Cheekbone Add Fullness
Placing your blush under the cheekbone, left, can help create a more defined bone structure. Applying under the cheekbone and above the jaw, right, makes the face appear fuller.

For the third placement, the makeup artist enhanced her cheekbones by placing the product directly underneath them, where contour would normally be placed. By doing this with blush instead of a darker contour or bronzer, the result is a much softer, subtle look.

For those wanting to add fullness instead of defining their bone structure, she begins by placing two dots in the same place, and adds another two directly underneath, in between the cheekbone and jawline. When I tried this technique, my face instantly looked fuller and rounder, taking with it any trace of a jawline.

Blush for a sun kissed look.

Blush Placement - Sunkissed Effect
For a sunkissed effect, apply blush across the center of your face. This placement mimics where you'd naturally catch color after a day in the sun.

The placement I'll be wearing throughout summer, for the final look Rachitskaya applies blush across the center of her face and the bridge of her nose, with the pink tone mimicking where she'd naturally catch some color after a day in the sun.

This application leaves the face with a flush of color, without impacting your face shape, giving the illusion of hours spent outside and a healthy glow.
