The Issue: Bowe Bergdahl, AIDS in Russia and What David Bowie Leaves Behind

On the cover of this week's issue of Newsweek Europe, we look at the story of former American POW Bowe Bergdahl. The 29-year-old U.S. army sergeant was held by the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan for five years between 2009 and 2014.

He's now facing a military trial in the United States on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. In our story we ask why the U.S. military is refusing to release a key report into what happened to Bergdahl.

Also in the magazine this week, we look at the spike in HIV and AIDS infections in Russia. In much of the world, HIV infection rates are going down, but in Russia they're spiraling up.

We look at the causes for this spike: intravenous drug use, unprotected sex and the conservative values of Vladimir Putin's modern Russia.

In our Downtime section this week we have an exclusive story about what David Bowie may have left behind. The rock star recorded a huge amount of music that has not been released. He also collected up to 75,000 of his personal possessions. What will the beneficiaries of the rock star's estate decide to do with this vast archive?

All this and more in the new issue of Newsweek Europe, on sale now.
