Thursday morning a fire broke out in Butte County, California, where a fire had started and was rapidly spreading. The Camp Fire started near Camp Creek Road near Highway 70 near Oroville.
The fire was prompting evacuation orders for people across Butte County, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection tweeted. There were evacuations in the works for those in the communities of Pulga, Paradise and Concow, according to Cal Fire. Additionally, Pentz Road was closed east until highway 70 in the area.
Photos from Cal Fire showed the smoke coming from the fire that only started Thursday morning. The sky was hazy and filled with smoke. There was a Red Flag alert in effect because of the strong winds in the area and the lack of humidity in the air. There was a Red Flag warning for interior northern California and some parts of southern California as well through Friday. Smoke from the fire was visible on radar, the National Weather Service in Sacramento, California, reported.
The evacuation warning alerts were meant to let people who are in danger know about the fire conditions and to alert them to leave. "People who need additional time should consider evacuating. An Evacuation Warning considers the probability that an area will be affected and the potential for an Order," said the County of Butte on Twitter.
The Camp Fire was one of the most recent to break out in California. The fire was burning more than 2,000 acres of land Thursday and as the smoke moved it was bringing the poor air quality with it.
Cal Fire was updating the information on the fire periodically Thursday while the Butte County Sheriff's office was constantly updating its Twitter account with evacuation updates and information about evacuation centers. There was a shelter set up at the Oroville Nazarene Church on Monte Vista Road in California Thursday.
Thousands of area residents were without power due to the fire Thursday, the Chico Enterprise-Record reported. Several reports said that there were structures in the fire's path but the possible damage the fire would do was unclear Thursday around 12:45 p.m. EDT.
One Twitter user tweeted that their mother was stuck on Pearson Road in Paradise trying to evacuate and that some people were choosing to run from the fire when the traffic wasn't moving.
Another user shared that their sister was trying to evacuate and power lines in the area were exploding.
A pastor from Sacramento tweeted that the Paradise Alliance Church in Paradise was meant to be an evacuation spot for those looking to escape the threat of the flames but that the fire was reaching the church as well.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
