'Call of Duty: Black Ops 4' Guide - Best & Worst Specialists for Multiplayer

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 features nearly a dozen Specialists with unique abilities. Every character has a use case depending on the situation, but here are the best and worst Specialists if you're just getting started in multiplayer.

'Call of Duty: Black Ops 4' Best Specialists

Black Ops 4 Specialists
Each Specialist in 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 4' has solid uses cases, but these are the very best ones the game has to offer. Treyarch/Activision

1) Recon: Especially in the hours after launch, Recon is making a big splash amongst the Black Ops 4 community. His Sensor Dart weapon and Vision Pulse abilities are awesome for visibility. While he's not outstanding from an offensive or defensive standpoint, the ability to see enemies through walls and on your map is a huge asset to a well-oiled team. He's essential for squad composition, because you can bet your opponents are taking advantage of him too.

2) Ruin: Some say Ruin was hugely OP in the Black Ops 4 beta, and his dominance continues at launch. His Grav Slam ability is essentially the same as Black Ops III's Gravity Spikes, but the Grapple Gun truly sets him apart. Using the grapple, it's possible to zip around and create vertical opportunities other Specialists can't match. You'll be able to get the drop on your opponent from far greater heights.

3) Nomad: Nomad is a diverse Specialist, whether you're new to Black Ops 4 or have been playing the game for a while. His K9 Unit follows you if necessary and can patrol specific locations on the map before you enter them. He also has the ability to deploy Mesh Mines that opponents can trip over.

If you're not great at traditional firefights, Nomad allows you to do most of your dirty work from a distance. With wires, you can accumulate kills without even being in the area. If you ever have to engage, just send your dog in first. For shy Call of Duty players, Nomad is a top-tier choice.

4) Battery: If grenades are your poison, Battery is an interesting pick as well. Her War Machine launches bouncing grenades, while her Cluster Grenade sticks to surfaces and creates small explosions. With those skills in mind, it's smart to have her on a well-composed team to drop in distance artillery to clear out clusters of enemies. If Nomad's dog or Recon's vision expose a foe, Battery can come in and mop up the mess.

5) Torque: Torque is for the defensive-minded or objective-focused player. His Barricade shields him while interacting with objectives, while also slowing and hurting enemies. You can also place Razor Wire as a second line of defense if you want to be truly sure you'll secure those extra points.

The phrase "play the objective" has almost become a meme at this point, but you still need someone to do that if you want to come away with the win. That being said, Torque winds up being a solid asset.

The Worst Specialist in 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 4'

Black Ops 4 Ajax
Ajax is our pick for worst Specialist in 'Black Ops 4.' Treyarch/Activision

Ajax: Every Specialist has its perks, but Ajax is probably the most useless member of the team. The Ballistic Shield is OK, but it's really no better than what Torque has to offer, and the .9-Bang grenade is just an inferior take on Battery. If you're a true lone wolf, maybe Ajax can work, but for now he's not great.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
