There's a lot to discuss about the new Captain Marvel trailer Brie Larson brought to Good Morning America. Namely, where did Marvel find a Blockbuster storefront for Carol Danvers' crash landing on Earth? Well, there's actually a few other important things we noticed too, like Captain Marvel's awesome helmet teasing her mohawk and a young, studly Phil Coulson. We're breaking down the trailer below.
The footage begins with Nick Fury's narration. "War is a universal language," he says, implying a war in space (possibly the Kree-Skrull war) is what sent Carol Danvers crashing to Earth. "I know a renegade soldier when I see one," Fury says, "Never occured to me one may come from above."
Next, Carol Danvers walks around a bus station in her green Starforce suit (seen in previous photos). She looks very lost and out of place, but Earth also feels weirdly familiar to her. Carol is running from something, and she's come to Earth to find answers about a past she can't remember.
"Space invasion, big car chase ... truth be told I was getting ready to hang it up, until I met you today," Fury, a young SHIELD agent, tells Carol around the 50-second mark. That moment appears to be when the two characters meet for the first time.
Carol explains she thinks she has a life on Earth, but she can't tell if its real or not. Flashbacks see her as a young kid playing baseball and later in life, training for the Air Force. But flashbacks also see her as a young woman in space, looking out a window where there's flying cars. She joins the Kree military's Starforce team, and at some point ends up back on Earth wearing that same Starforce costume.
Between brief shots of Jude Law's still unnamed character, Nick Fury's pager, and a young Coulson, Carol punches an old woman on the train (presumably an Skrull alien hiding in human form.) Fury says he needs Carol's help to defend Earth, and that's when the trailer really starts to soar. Carol is caught in a mysterious blue explosion, teasing the moment she gets her powers (It's unclear at what point in her life this happens).
Now comes her full costume debut. Captain Marvel has never worn a helmet in any photos released so far, but it turns out the studio saved the reveal for the trailer. The footage sees Carol flying in space while wearing her classic helmet from the comics. One shot teases the mohawk, and another shows her helmet in full. It's the same helmet with two different modes.
That's all we noticed in the trailer, aside from one mysterious shot of what looks like Nick Fury observing an alien experiment inside a SHIELD base. Any theories about what's going on there?
