Carolina Panthers Net Worth: P Diddy Probably Can't Afford an NFL Team But Stephen Curry Could Help

In maybe the most 2017 thing to happen to the NFL so far in 2017, P Diddy announced in the early hours of Monday morning that he wanted to buy the Carolina Panthers.

"I would like to buy the @Panthers. Spread the word. Retweet!" Diddy posted Monday, followed by several more tweets that expanded on his vision. "There are no majority African American NFL owners. Let's make history," Diddy added. He then posted a picture of himself from 2003 in a Panthers jersey with the caption, "ATTN all @NFL owners, it's time for diversity!! It's time for Black ownership!! The time is now. Let's make it happen!!"

The Panthers, who are likely to make the playoffs this year, have been put up for sale by current owner Jerry Richardson. The 81-year-old is facing an investigation by the NFL into allegations of workplace misconduct. The Panthers are carrying out their own internal investigation. "I believe that it is time to turn the franchise over to new ownership," Richardson told the Panthers' official website. "Therefore, I will put the team up for sale at the end of this NFL season."

Despite worldwide fame and success as a hip-hop artist, Diddy will almost certainly struggle to afford the Panthers on his own. Forbes valued the franchise at $2.3 billion in September but Forbes values Diddy at only $820 million. And as the New York Daily News pointed out Monday, "Sports teams also typically sell for significantly more money than their reported value."

Diddy, then, would probably need a consortium or ownership group if he's serious about buying the Panthers. He may get some help from elsewhere in the professional sports world, though. "I want in!" Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors tweeted above one of Diddy's posts on Monday.
