Hilarious 2016 Makeup Recreation Goes Viral: 'A Wild Era'

Let's reflect on 2016: "Hotline Bling" is blasting on the radio, the streets are full of people playing Pokémon Go, and you can't step outside without seeing a set of carved-out eyebrows.

For those unfamiliar, or lucky enough to have never tested the now "cheugy" trend, beauty lovers will share their memories of hours spent in front of a mirror trying to perfect the block-brow look that was popular at the time.

Trailblazers of the look may remember a period when not everyone could recognize the art and effort behind a carved brow—or the time spent perfecting the look. On TikTok, Isabel Clancy, under the handle @isabelclanc, shared such a memory in a video that has received more than 3.9 million views since she posted it on April 27.

Now considered a "wild era" for makeup, 2016 saw the power of influencers grow immensely, thanks in part to Kylie Jenner's "King Kylie" era and the rise in popularity of the likes of James Charles and Jeffree Star.

In the clip, which has received more than 466,000 likes, Clancy plays the role of both a mother and a daughter in a scene many viewers may relate to. She shows the mother's confusion at the bold, intense makeup look her daughter is creating in front of her.

The back-and-forth highlighted the beauty-language barrier between the two generations, as the mother asks the daughter if she's "sculpting" her brows, despite being told she's "carving them out."

In 2016, "carving" your brows was a popular look, in which you used concealer to tidy up and block out your brow shape after filling in any sparse areas.

While we have since moved away from a carved brow in favor of a more natural look, comments on Clancy's TikTok video shows some people still aren't ready to give up the trend completely, as one user wrote, "I will never let go of 2016 brows."

Another added, "2016 makeup was elite and my mind cannot be changed."

A commenter said, "2016 was the best makeup era and that is a hill I will die on."

Others disagreed, having since rethought their makeup choices. One user wrote, "2016 makeup prob the worst makeup era but the most iconic."

Commenting on the commitment to create such an intense look daily, another user said: "2016 makeup was a wild era. We literally wore birthday makeup everyday."

It wasn't only brows that were bold in 2016, as one commenter reminded us: "I have a photo of me posing with the huge bronzer contour jaw and cheek bone line. I thought I ATE."
