Cheese Recall Map Shows Area Affected

Numerous cheese products from two companies are being recalled over fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.

A selection of cheese products produced by Hy-Vee and Schnucks have both been separately recalled in recent days due to a risk of carrying salmonella, the most common cause of food poisoning in the U.S. The recalled items include cream cheeses and dessert foods, with a total of 11 products removed from shelves.

Hy-Vee recall

Hy-Vee is recalling two cream cheese spreads and its bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix. Products include:

  • Hy-Vee Whipped Cream Cheese Spread—8 ounce—Best/use by date: August 7, 2024 and August 14, 2024. No lot code.
  • Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread—12 ounce—Best/use by date: October 1, 2024. No lot code.
  • Hy-Vee To Go Cookies & Cream Mix—4 ounce—Best/use by date: December 5, 2024. Lot code: 24073.
  • Hy-Vee To Go Cookies & Cream Mix—4 ounce—Best/use by date: December 1, 2024. Lot code: 24101.
  • Hy-Vee To Go Cookies & Cream Mix—4 ounce—Best/use by date: December 5, 2024. Lot code: 24117.
  • Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix—16 ounce—Best/use by date: December 5, 2024. Lot code: 24073.
  • Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix—16 ounce—Best/use by date: December 1, 2024. Lot code: 24101.
  • Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix—16 ounce—Best/use by date: December 5, 2024. Lot code: 24117.

Stores: Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore, Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores and Dollar Fresh Market locations.

States affected: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Any consumers with questions can call Hy-Vee's customer care team on (800) 772-4098. Newsweek has contacted Hy-Vee for comment via email outside of normal working hours.

Schnucks recall

Schnucks is also recalling three cream cheese and cream-based items. Products included:

  • Schnucks Whip Cream Spread: UPC 4131858005. Best by: August 8, 2024.
  • Schnucks Strawberry Spread: UPC 4131858007. Best by: September 8, 2024.
  • Schnucks Cream Cheese Spread: UPC 4131858023. Best by: August 10, 2024.

States affected: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Schnucks has confirmed that any products can be returned to the nearest of its stores for a full refund or exchange. Customers with queries regarding the recall should contact Schnucks customer care team on 314-994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400.

According to the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service, common symptoms of a salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever that may occur within six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food. Typically, most people recover without the need for medical intervention within a few days.

However, in rare cases, salmonella can enter the bloodstream and lead to more serious conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis. It is important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen. People with weakened immune systems, the elderly and young children are particularly at risk,
