Chicago Police Officers Killed By Train While In Pursuit

Two police officers were killed when they were hit by a train Monday night in Chicago. Reports indicate the officers were investigating a call for shots fired on the Far South Side of the city.

The Chicago Tribune reported that CPD officers Eduardo Marmolejo, 36, and Conrad Gary, 31, were killed on the railroad track in the line of duty.

After reports of gunfire prompted the officers to survey the area, they were hit by an outbound South Shore rail at the 103rd Street Rosemoor stop near 103rd Street and Dauphin Avenue around 6:20 p.m.

"These brave young men were consumed with identifying a potential threat," police superintendent Eddie Johnson said late Monday at the Police Department's South Side headquarters. "These brave young men were consumed with identifying a potential threat."

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the two officers investigated the area, then pursued the suspects by foot, and that's when their tragic end happened.

"The most dangerous thing is to take a weapon off an armed individual," Johnson said. "I am deeply saddened by this tragic event and ask that everyone keep their (families) and co-workers in their thoughts and prayers. An investigation is underway, and we will keep everyone updated as details emerge."

"A weapon was recovered and a person of interest is being questioned at the site where two newly appointment #ChicagoPolice officers lost their lives protecting their community from a gunman," Guglielmi said.
