Chinese Propaganda Cartoon Promotes Five Year Plan

Chinese state media has released a colorful cartoon propaganda video to herald China's 13th five-year plan—the country's future economic strategy.

A link to the video, which features the catchy jingle "If you wanna know what China's gonna do, best pay attention to the shí sān wǔ', was posted on Twitter by Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, on Tuesday.

The video features four guitar-wielding hippies riding a Volkswagen bus while a song plays in the background. The song is in English, the singers have distinct American accents and the message is decidedly pro-China.

While the song is light on details surrounding the five-year plan, the lyrics attempt to explain what it is: 'There's government ministers and think tank minds, And party leadership contributing finds. There's doctors, bankers, farmers, too, And even engineers who deal with poo!', go the lyrics.

The video also features Albert Einstein, a cassette player, a disco ball and a giant president Xi Jinping, among other oddities.

Discussions around China's latest economic plan take place during a four-day meeting of more than 200 of the Communist Party's top leaders, known as fifth plenum, and ends on Thursday.

According to Quartz, the video is just the latest propaganda video to be produced by the Chinese production company Fuxing Road Studio, of which little is known. It has never introduced itself as a party-backed production company, although it appears to enjoy state endorsement, judging by Xinhua's Twitter post. The company also does not provide credits for its filmmaking crew.
