Christina Applegate offered support to Selena Gomez on Tuesday after watching the multi-hyphenate's new Apple TV documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.
In the documentary, which premiered on November 4, Gomez gives viewers an intimate look at her struggles with bipolar disorder and lupus. She revealed that, after suffering a "psychotic break" during her 2016 The Revival Tour, she was admitted to a hospital, and later received treatment at a mental health facility following her bipolar diagnosis in 2019.
She also offered a raw look into some of the physical pain she's experienced as a result of her battle with lupus—something to which Applegate, who has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), can relate.
"To @selenagomez. [I] am watching your documentary. From one immunocompromised to another. I'm here xo," Applegate tweeted on Tuesday. "MS and [Lupus] are baby sisters from other mothers and a dad who owns a weird truck. Xo. Good on you kid for opening [your] life to those that need an eye open."
Twitter Shows Support
Gomez has yet to respond to the tweet. However, hundreds of other Twitter users responded with kind words for both actresses.
"Thank you both for sharing your journeys with us," @jimkwik tweeted. "You inspire us with your grit & grace."
"I am a huge fan of you both. Your latest shows are gold, and you both make me laugh. You are warriors in this world. I wish you all the best and hope for more better days than not," @court_casaccio said.
@diana_riccio added: "Thank you both for shedding a light on autoimmune diseases like Lupus and MS. My family suffers [from] Lupus and are grateful to know we are not alone in our fight!"
Appelgate's MS Battle
Applegate announced her MS diagnosis via Twitter last summer. And in a recent conversation with The New York Times, the actress recalled experiencing balance issues before receiving her diagnosis. Julie Fiol, Associate Vice President of Clinical Innovation and Strategy for the National MS Society, told Newsweek that the loss of balance is a "common symptom of MS and is often one of the presenting symptoms of MS."
"I wish I had paid attention," Applegate told The New York Times of her balance issues. "But who was I to know?"
Applegate also revealed that she's gained 40 pounds since her diagnosis and "can't walk without a cane." She added that the third and final season of Dead to Me will be "the first time anyone's going to see me the way I am."
Newsweek has reached out to Applegate's team for comment.
Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is streaming on Apple TV+ now, and the final season of Dead to Me will be available for streaming on Netflix starting November 17.
