Director Christopher Nolan's next movie finally has a title and plot synopsis, though the project remains mostly mysterious.
Alongside casting announcements, Variety revealed that Nolan's next movie, titled Tenet, is "an action epic evolving from the world international espionage." Appropriate to the James Bond-esque pitch, Tenet is being filmed on-location in seven different countries.
While Nolan has previously filmed on large-format film stock, including IMAX sequences shot for Interstellar and his Batman movies, Tenet will be his second picture, after Dunkirk, to shoot entirely in 70 mm and IMAX, creating a higher resolution image that can be projected in a taller aspect ratio than standard 35 mm movies.
Actors joining Tenet include Aarton Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Dimple Kapadia and Nolan mainstay Michael Caine. They will join previously announced cast members, including Elizabeth Debicki, Robert Pattinson, and Tenet 's lead, John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).
Caine isn't the only frequent Nolan collaborator returning for Tenet, with Nathan Crowley coming back as production designer and Jeffrey Kurland acting as costume designer. Interstellar and Dunkirk director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema will lens the movie. Other members of the creative team are new collaborators, including editor Jennifer Lame (Hereditary, Manchester by the Sea) and composer Ludwig Göransson.
Aside from recent exceptions Dunkirk and Inception, Nolan generally co-writes his movie's scripts with brother Jonathan Nolan. But with Jonathan busy on Westworld, Tenet writing duties fell on Christopher alone. While both tend toward the twisty, Dunkirk marked a departure from the typical Nolan script, with minimal dialogue and without a single character haunted by a dead wife. Set in the world of espionage, Tenet seems tailor-made for Nolan to get back up to his old tricks, so it will be interesting to see whether his next project will mark another step forward in the evolution of the director's storytelling ambitions.
Tenet will be out in theaters on July 17, 2020.
