'Criminal Minds' Reboot: Everything We Know so Far

Criminal Minds may have only ended two years ago, but there have been constant rumors since that the show would be rebooted on streaming.

Paramount+ first announced that they had greenlit a Criminal Minds revival in February 2021. However, actor Paget Brewster said in July of that year that the project was "unlikely" and even "dead."

The reboot, however, has now been confirmed, with a number of major cast members returning—though not everyone fans want to see will be back.

Now that details of what the reboot will be like are starting to emerge, here's what we know about the upcoming return of Criminal Minds.

The Criminal Minds Reboot Will Have 10 Episodes—but Fans May Have a While Before the Release Date

This version of the CBS show will look slightly different. Before, seasons of the show tended to be 20-plus episodes long, with the team looking at a different case every episode.

The Paramount+ version will tweak this formula a little. Ten episodes have been greenlit, with the team investigating a single case over those installments.

When viewers will get to see those installments, however, has yet to be determined. Joe Mantegna (who played David Rossi on the show) tweeted an image from the partially-built set in mid-July, suggesting that filming has not begun yet on the show. This means that a release date in 2023 seems more likely than a 2022 one.

Mantegna tweeted: "Just doing a little inspection today for an upcoming project. #criminal minds." [sic]

Six Criminal Minds Cast Members Will be Back

So far, six cast members have been announced for the reboot, returning from the 2005 version:

  • Joe Mantegna - David Rossi
  • Adam Rodriguez - Luke Alvez
  • A.J. Cook - Jennifer Jareau
  • Aisha Tyler - Tara Lewis
  • Paget Brewster - Emily Prentiss
  • Kirsten Vangsness - Penelope Garcia

Also returning is Erica Messer, returning as the show's long-tenured showrunner.

Two familiar faces are not returning. Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney will not star in the Paramount+ show as Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons respectively. Per Deadline, the former declined to return to the show, while the latter is busy with Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.

The Show Could Return for Multiple Seasons

Per Deadline, the cast has signed multi-year contracts. This means that the show may not be taking the limited series route taken by shows like Dexter: New Blood and could continue if it is a big enough hit for Paramount+.

Criminal Minds Seasons 1 to 15 are streaming now on Paramount+. Netflix is steaming the first 12 seasons.
