Dana Carvey Shares Update Following Death of Son, Dex, at 32 years old

Wayne's World star Dana Carvey has announced he is taking a break from acting following the death of his son, Dex.

In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, the comedian, 68, said he and his family would try to heal following Dex's death aged just 32.

He went on to thank people for sharing their compassion and personal stories with him and his wife Paula Zwagerman.

"We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words," Carvey said on Saturday, November 18.

"I will be taking a break from work and social media—trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of three. We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way. Much love, Dana."

Carvey announced in a November 16 Instagram post that Dex died of an accidental drug overdose.

"Dex packed a lot into those 32 years," the statement said. "He was extremely talented at so many things—music, art, filmmaking, comedy and pursued all of them passionately.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee."

Carvey went on to describe Dex as "a beautiful person" and that the family "will miss him forever."

He and Paula also shared a message in support of people who are struggling with addiction or know someone who is. "You are in our hearts and prayers," the message ended.

Following the announcement of Dex's death, Carvey shared photos of his son on social media.

One photo of Carvey and his son shared on November 17 said: "Dex and me working together. What a joy."

Dex followed his father into comedy and opened for Carvey in his 2016 comedy special Straight White Male, 60.

He also featured alongside his father in a number of shows, including The Funster and Beyond the Comics.

Carvey is best known for his time on Saturday Night Live (SNL). His performances led him to win an Emmy award for outstanding individual performance.

Following the confirmation of Dex's death, SNL cast member Colin Jost shared a message at the end of the November 18 episode which read: "We love you, Dana and Paula."
