Day-Lewis reunites with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson for Phantom Thread, playing a lauded dressmaker whose meticulous creativity is severely tested when he falls in love with a young woman who challenges his structured life.
The post–World War II period drama stars Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock and Lesley Manville as his sister Cyril. Together they are London's premier fashion house, dressing royalty, socialites and movie stars. Vicky Krieps plays Alma, Day-Lewis's love interest.
Phantom Thread, released in December, will be the 60-year-old actor's final film before he retires from movies.
Day-Lewis's publicist confirmed to Variety in June, "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. "
The actor is expected to complete publicity duties for Phantom Thread before retiring from public life.
Day-Lewis is the only actor in history to win three Academy Awards for outstanding lead actor. His first came for the 1989 drama My Left Foot, followed by a win for Anderson's There Will Be Blood, released in 2007. He was awarded his last Oscar for 2012's Lincoln, the Steven Spielberg–directed biographical drama in which Day-Lewis portrayed President Abraham Lincoln. He was also nominated for Gangs of New York and In the Name of the Father.
The actor took a five-year break from acting in the late 1990s before returning to play gang leader William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. During his hiatus, Day-Lewis spent 10 months working as an apprentice for shoemaker Stefano Bemer.
Phantom Thread is released this Christmas.
