David Spade Says Ex-Girlfriend Heather Locklear Is in 'a Tough Situation'

David Spade checked in on ex-girlfriend Heather Locklear during her recent troubles, the actor and comedian said on SiriusXM's Radio Andy Wednesday.

Locklear checked in on him after his sister-in-law Kate Spade was found dead from an apparent suicide last month, Spade told the radio show's host, Andy Cohen. Others did as well, letting him know they were there for him. It was "a friendly gesture" he returned, because "that's some niceness coming in, good vibes instead of what's going on."

"You don't want to be condescending. She's having a tough situation," he told Cohen of Locklear. "We all do. I have my down moments. … Everyone's literally one inch away from having some trouble sometimes."

Locklear was arrested when police responded to a call about domestic violence, ET Online reported in February. She "was uncooperative with the deputies and actually battered three of our deputies," a Ventura County Sheriff's department spokesperson told the publication, adding their investigation "revealed that she had actually battered a boyfriend at the residence prior to our arrival. She was arrested for one count of felony domestic violence and three counts misdemeanor battery on a police officer."

Her recent troubles have included another arrest during a similar incident and a possible overdose, People reported in June.

Spade and Locklear dated in 2006. "I will always be indebted to her because she was so nice, so fun and went out with me, even though I'm sure she took some grief, but I grew up loving her," he told Cohen.

He also said he ran into her at Saturday Night Live when she hosted the late-night comedy show on NBC in 1994. Spade was a writer and cast member on SNL from 1990 to 1996. He hosted twice, in 1998 and 2005. He didn't believe she remembered him.

"I was some doofy writer, walking around, not getting any sketches on," he recalled, adding he was "mesmerized by her." He later ran into her. "We were friendly, and then we started hanging out," he told Cohen. "She's always so chirpy and fun and hilarious, so I would just keep checking in on her now and then."

Spade had stopped by the radio show to discuss his new audio book, A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World, available now on Amazon's Audible, and movie, Father of the Year, which will be on Netflix Friday.
