Debate Rages Online Over Best Time to Shower: 'Sleep In Your Filth'

Debate is raging on Twitter over whether it's better to shower first thing in the morning or last thing at night, with users firmly divided on the matter.

According to a YouGov America poll, 66 percent of U.S. adults shower once a day or more. But while there appears to be a clear consensus on washing at least once a day, the response to a recent tweet from DannyVegito suggests we are divided on when to do it.

The tweet reads: "Morning shower people: how does it feel to sleep in your filth every night? What is it like knowing the grime of everything you've done this week is fermenting in your sheets? Do you ever feel clean?"

At the time of writing, the post has generated over 6,000 retweets, 2,500 quote tweets and 68,000 likes. It's sparked some lively debate too, with Twitter users weighing in with their own views on the best time to shower.

TheRealPengPong retorted: "Night shower people: how does it feel to immediately have the fruits of your shower labor be eaten by the decaying stagnance of hours of sleep only to carry that atmosphere of rot through the day?"

Linrod Skinrod fired back: "The fruits of the night shower labor are immaculately clean sleep. The fruits of the morning shower labor are immediately eaten by walking out the door. And at night you bring a whole day's worth of filth into your BED."

Wallachiamn offered up another argument as to why showering at night did not work, saying: "You're post-shower-sweating into your sheets and don't even notice."

Em_ily_donley had an altogether different theory though, writing: "The morning shower people wake up feeling gross because they sleep in their gross bed and wake up with all the sweat from the day before dried on them."

Mathdemigod was still unconvinced though.

"When you shower in the evening, you're still marinating in sweat and dead skin," he said. "The only difference is you don't wash it off before interacting with other people. Pretty gross."

Unhinderedlass had a foot in both camps, writing: "I'll often double up and do a night shower too cuz it's cozy."

While the internet appears firmly divided on the subject, Dr. Mary Stevenson, a leading dermatologist based in New York, told Newsweek that there's not necessarily a right or wrong answer.

"It truly depends on you and your schedule," Stevenson explained. "Most important is showering after you do things like workout, get hot and sweaty, or get dirty. If you are generally clean then it is up to your preference. Those with dry skin may prefer evening so that they can slather more moisture on under their jammies."

But while she said it was ultimately "dealer's choice" on whether to shower in the morning or evening, Stevenson did warn that "showering twice a day unless necessary (dirty, sweaty etc) might dry out your skin" and should be avoided if possible.

Newsweek has contacted DannyVegito for comment.
