'Deeply Moved' Kamala Harris Reacts to Ketanji Brown Jackson's Confirmation

Vice President Kamala Harris has said she's feeling "overjoyed" and "deeply moved" after Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Talking to reporters after the confirmation of Jackson, the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, Harris said she was "deeply moved [...] that we have just made a decision to put this extraordinary jurist on the highest court of our land. It's a good statement about who we are."

During Jackson's confirmation, Harris was seen handing a note to New Jersey's Cory Booker and Georgia's Raphael Warnock—the only two Black Democrats in the Senate. She reportedly told them to write a letter to two young Black girls in their lives.

Warnock later shared an image of a letter addressed to his daughter Chloé on his Instagram profile.

"Dear Chloé, today we confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court. In our nation's history, she's the first Supreme Court Justice who looks like you - with hair like yours.

"While we were voting on the floor of the Senate, a friend of mine - the Vice President of the United States handed me this piece of paper and suggested I write a note to someone who comes to mind.

"By the way, she is the first Vice President who also looks like you! So, I wrote this note to say you can be anything, achieve anything you set your head and heart to do. Love you! Dad," read the note.

Before the vote, Warnock said of Jackson that "she embodies the arc of our history." "She is America at its best. That I believe in my heart after meeting with her in my office, talking to folks who I trust who know her and hearing her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee," he said.

Booker shared images of President Joe Biden and Jackson hugging after the confirmation, saying "just beautiful."

"No one is going to steal my joy today. Still beaming over the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court," Booker later wrote on Twitter.

President Biden shared a photo of Jackson and himself taking a selfie on Twitter, writing that the confirmation was "a historic moment for our nation."

"We've taken another step toward making our highest court reflect the diversity of America. She will be an incredible Justice, and I was honored to share this moment with her," he wrote.

Jackson was confirmed on Thursday with 53 votes to 47, becoming the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in its over 200-year-long history. Harris called for the final vote on Jackson with a smile on her face, and after the judge's confirmation was announced, the Senate broke into applause.

Jackson gained bipartisan support after tense days of hearing and weeks of approval process, marked by some polarizing questioning by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

All Democratic senators voted in favor. They were joined by Republican senators Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.

As Jackson is 51 years old, it appears likely that she will be able to serve the Supreme Court for decades to come.

Biden, Harris and Jackson are expected to make celebratory remarks on the confirmation on Friday.
