It seems like every Marvel character will be a part of Avengers: Infinity War when the movie comes out in April. But that, unfortunately, doesn't include the heroes of the Netflix/Marvel universe.
Speaking with French entertainment publication Premiere, directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed they considered adding Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist into the massive Marvel Studios movie but couldn't figure out how to make it work.
"We have considered everything. But the trick is that we already have at least sixty characters with whom we must tell a story," Joe Russo said. "And it's hard enough to communicate with Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, Scott Derrickson, Peyton Reed, [Jon Watts, Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck] and James Gunn at the same time, not to add all the showrunners and TV crews to this. The latter is also led by totally different people. So it's practically impossible. Our job is to focus on the Marvel film world and offer a satisfying climax. "
It's been well documented that the television and film side of Marvel Comics have operated mostly independent of each other since 2015, so it's not surprising that characters from television haven't jumped to the movies yet.
The opposite has been the case, however, with secondary characters from films appearing on Agents of SHIELD, and the events from the movies impacting the storylines of the show. But the connections are less noticeable with the Netflix/Marvel series. Characters in Luke Cage or Jessica Jones might briefly mention moments in Marvel Studios history, like the Battle of New York, or the occasional name drop of Captain America and Thor. So far, that's the most we've seen the Netflix shows interact with the mainline MCU.
That doesn't mean it won't ever happen. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that the movies and TV series will eventually crossover in the future. Infinity War is already bringing in dozens of characters across numerous locations, so it seems likethe Defenders of New York City will just have to wait to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with the Avengers.
Avengers: Infinity War will release April 27.
