Mark Cuban Helps Delonte West Get Back on His Feet: West's Stats and Standouts

Entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently shared an update on how former Mavericks guard Delonte West is doing on his road to recovery while in rehab. "A long, long, long way to go, but he has taken the first steps and shared these with all of us as a thank you for the love and support," Cuban tweeted on Friday.

While West has not played in the NBA since 2012 (his final season with the Mavericks), he had an impressive eight-year career nonetheless.

Beginning with the Boston Celtics in 2004, West reached his highest points per game average in his third season with the Celtics, in the 2006-07 season, with a 12.2 point average, according to Basketball Reference. The previous season, he averaged 11.8 points per game. He reached similar averages in his first two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 10.3 points per game in the 2007-08 season and 11.7 points in the 2008-09 season. His career average points per game is 9.7.

In his final season with the Mavericks, West played 44 games as point guard and averaged 9.6 points per game.

Throughout his 10-season career, West had a .448 field goal percentage, with a .372 3-point field goal percentage and a .501 effective field goal percentage.

West was picked in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Celtics, when he was a junior at St. Joseph's University in Pennsylvania. During his collegiate career, West received a handful of NCAA awards. In 2004, he was part of the NABC All-American Third Team, according to Real GM. In 2003 and 2004, he was part of the Atlantic 100 All-Conference First Team.

Following his NBA career and release from the Mavericks, West continued playing in various leagues, including a few internationally. He had two stints with the D-League team, the Texas Legends in 2013 and 2015. He also joined the Los Angeles Clippers as part of their summer league roster in 2014. In the 2013-14 season, he played 33 games in China. In the 2014-15 season, he played only four games with the Shanghai Sharks, according to Basketball Reference.

West has had a long struggle with mental illness and addiction throughout his career. As previously reported, West was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while still playing basketball. In September, Cuban allegedly offered to pay to send the player to rehab.

While it's unclear if West has any plans to return to professional basketball following his recovery, West did express an interest in returning to the NBA in a 2014 interview with Vice. "I just want to show the world—I want to show the NBA how much a better player, person I am. I want to finish the chapter in my book. It's the last chapter left: that my son will sit court-side with a jersey [on] and say, 'That's my daddy right there,'" he said.
