'Dietland' Season 1 Episode 3: Plum Prepares To Go Off The Y [EXCLUSIVE CLIP]

AMC's much buzzed-about series, Dietland, premiered Monday, June 4 on AMC with a jarring opening sequence that hooks you from the outset. But there was one particular aspect of heroine Plum's mundane morning routine that piqued viewers' interest: the mysterious Y medication. In an exclusive clip (above) from the upcoming episode 3, we see Plum preparing to get off the Y.

Though the first two episodes didn't reveal what the Y medication is or why Plum takes it, hints throughout the premiere suggest it was prescribed for anxiety or depression. Apart from the opening scene of the premiere, Plum mentions Y during two separate interactions. In both conversations, she is guarded about the reasons she began taking the drug and what conditions it remedies. During a chat with her well-meaning but disconnected Waist Watcher's counselor, we learn Plum began taking "Y" in college. When probed about her reasons, Plum says it was to deal with the "stress" of her Master's program, but subtleties in the dialogue suggest Plum is holding something back.

Towards the end of episode 2, Plum meets the mysterious Verena Baptist, heiress to a diet-plan fortune. After the untimely death of her parents, Verena denounced the evils of the Baptist Weight Loss Plan and promptly shut it down. She uses the inherited funds to back women-led projects she believes can make a difference in the world.

Plum tells Verena about a romantic encounter in college that ended with her affections being brutally rebuffed. After some prompting by Verena, Plum reveals she "went on Y after the college guy."

Verena then proposes a new plan for Plum that, if completed, will make her $20,000 richer. With a costly weight-loss surgery ahead, Plum agrees and the adventure is about to begin.

The new clip from episode 3 (above) features a scene between Verena and Plum as the latter prepares to get off the Y. Plum reveals she's flushed the pills already, much to Verena's alarm: quitting an antidepressant cold turkey is a bad idea. We can only imagine the wild ride detox will be in episode 3.

Dietland's upcoming episode "Y Not" airs Monday, June 11 at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
