Five months since the big reveal, Jodie Whittaker has bowed out from the show as the 13th doctor, but her exit came with a huge twist, revealing a different reincarnation of the doctor than expected, who will take the reins before Gatwa steps up.

When Is Doctor Who Season 14 Out?

There is bittersweet news for Doctor Who fans. Season 14 is officially on the way, but unfortunately, there will be a bit of a wait until the new series arrives.

Season 14 will officially premiere on BBC One in the U.K. in November 2023.

Fans in the U.S. will be able to watch the new series via BBC America and AMC+ in November 2023.

For now, the exact release for Season 14 hasn't been revealed, but as you count down the days, you can watch older episodes of Doctor Who now via the BBC iPlayer and HBO Max.

Who Stars in Doctor Who Season 14?

At the end of Season 13, Jodie Whittaker's Doctor unexpectedly regenerated into the 14th Doctor, played by David Tennant.

Tennant previously played the role of the 10th Doctor between 2005 and 2010 and it was widely known he would be returning to the new series to celebrate the sci-fi drama's 60th anniversary.

However, it has now been officially confirmed by the BBC that he will be putting in more than a cameo role in Season 14. Instead, Tennant will be playing the famous Doctor for three episodes in total.

Speaking to BBC News, Tennant said: "Doctor Who runs through my life, as if through a stick of rock really. It's a show that I loved as a small child, I grew up obsessed with it. I went to get [fourth Doctor] Tom Baker's autograph in Glasgow, John Menzies.

"I thought it was something that I would certainly never be as involved in again... it's like being given the loveliest present. And I'm very, very excited. I'm thrilled and I hope people will enjoy the stories we've got to tell."

After Tennant's stint in Season 14 of Doctor Who concludes, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa is set to step into the role of the 15th Doctor.

Also returning for Season 14 is Catherine Tate, who will reprise her role as Donna Noble, Tennant's assistant.

What Will Happen in Doctor Who Season 14?

For now, what will happen in Doctor Who Season 14 has been kept largely under wraps, but following Season 13's finale, the BBC has been able to tease a little bit of what fans can expect.

Tennant and Tate will star in three special episodes to celebrate the show's 60th anniversary. In those three special episodes, Tennant will reprise his role as the 10th doctor, with Gatwa set to take over as the 15th Doctor in one of the episodes.

The trio will be joined by How I Met Your Mother Star, Neil Patrick Harris.

Originally, Gatwa was named as the 14th Doctor when it was announced he would be taking over as the doctor.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies teased in the following statement to the BBC: "If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we've got plenty more surprises on the way! The path to Ncuti's Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We're giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!"

Is There a Trailer for Doctor Who Season 14?

Yes, there is an exciting new trailer for Doctor Who Season 14 to keep fans in suspense.

The short clip re-introduces Tennant as the 14th Doctor as well as Tate and Donna Noble.

However, there are two huge surprises included in the trailer. Fans also get their first look at Neil Patrick Harris in the series and of course, the highly anticipated first look at Gatwa as the 15th Doctor.

The trailer comes to an end with Gatwa's Doctor shouting: "Someone tell me what the hell is going on here!"

Audiences also have the pleasure of re-watching Whittaker's Doctor regenerate into Tennant's Doctor. The final scene from Season 13, reintroduces Tennant who can be seen standing outside of the famous blue Tardis where Whittaker once stood.

In a throwback to his first time as the Doctor, Tennant says: "I know these teeth" before looking down at his hands with a bewildered look.
