DOJ Responds to Trump's Demand For Action on FBI 'Mole'

The Department of Justice (DOJ) will take up President Donald Trump's demand that potential infiltration of his campaign by an FBI informant be investigated, with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein calling in the inspector general to investigate.

In a statement released Sunday that appeared to respond to Trump's tweet on the matter, Rosenstein said action would be taken if it is determined that there was an FBI mole in the Trump campaign team.

"I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes—and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!" President Trump tweeted on Sunday.

His comments followed a report from The Washington Post last week that indicated an FBI informant approached three members of Trump's campaign team. Although the paper reported there was no evidence to suggest a mole was planted within the campaign team, Trump believes the FBI placed an informant in his team.

"If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action," Rosenstein's statement said.

DOJ spokesperson Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement that the inspector general would consult with "the appropriate U.S. attorney" about whether there is any evidence of potential criminal conduct, The Hill reported.

In the statement seen by CNN, Flores said the DOJ had asked the inspector general to look into whether there was any "impropriety or political motivation" in the FBI's conduct of its counterintelligence investigation of people suspected of involvement with the Russians who interfered in the 2016 presidential election.
