Donald Trump Blasts 2020 Candidate Bill De Blasio As 'The Worst Mayor In the U.S.,' Predicts He 'Won't Last Long' in Presidential Race

President Donald Trump on Thursday evening torched New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, insulting de Blasio's current job and mocking his ability to put up a sustainable presidential bid.

In a video posted to Twitter Thursday afternoon, Trump commented on de Blasio officially becoming the 24th candidate to seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee.

"I can't believe it," the president said in the 36-second-long clip. "I just heard that the worst mayor in the history of New York City, and without question, the worst mayor in the United States, is now running for president."

"It will never happen," Trump added. "I'm pretty good at predicting things like that. I would be very surprised to see him in their for a long period, but it's just not going to happen. If you like high taxes, if you like crime, you can vote for him. But most people aren't into that. So, I wish him luck, but really it'd be better off if you get back to New York City and did your job for the little time you have left. Good luck. Do well."

When de Blasio officially launched his presidential bid on Good Morning America Thursday morning, he attacked Trump as a "con artist," prompting the president to hit back at him on Twitter.

"The Dems are getting another beauty to join their group. Bill de Blasio of NYC, considered the worst mayor in the U.S., will supposedly be making an announcement for president today," the president tweeted on later this morning. "He is a JOKE, but if you like high taxes & crime, he's your man. NYC HATES HIM!"

De Blasio's bid comes after a Quinnipiac University Poll, released in April, showed that 76 percent of New York City respondents said he should not run for president

"Mayor Bill de Blasio's flirtation with a 2020 White House bid is prompting a rare moment of unity among New Yorkers. Three-quarters of them say, 'Mr. Mayor: Don't do it,'" Mary Snow, polling analyst for the Quinnipiac University Poll, said.

In a statement on Thursday, the New York City's police union echoed Trump's sentiments and accused de Blasio of neglecting the city's crime. "While the mayor of our nation's largest city is busy running around Iowa and getting upstaged by the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, there are real problems here at home," the New York City Police Benevolent Association wrote. "New York City police officers are continuing to suffer with wages 30 percent below market rate because the mayor has totally checked out of our contract process."

"As commander-in-chief, he would be an unmitigated disaster."
