DC Universe, the upcoming digital streaming service tailored for fans of DC Comics, has added another live-action series: Doom Patrol. Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Jeremy Carver and Sarah Schechter will executive produce. Warner Bros. ordered Doom Patrol straight to series for 13, hour-long episodes. The show will take place after being introduced on Titans, another live-action DC Universe original set for 2019 release.

"Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of one of DC's most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol's members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities, but also left them scarred and disfigured," says a Warner Bros. press release.

"Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find," the description continues. "Part support group, part superhero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same."

The original Doom Patrol first appeared in My Greatest Adventure #80 in June 1963, created by Arnold Drake and Bob Haney with artist Bruno Premiani. One of the most compelling incarnations of the team (iconic for the times) was during Grant Morrison's 44-issue run starting in 1989. Hopefully, the show will be just as offbeat and goofy.

In addition to Titans and Doom Patrol, DC Universe will host two more live action shows, Swamp Thing and Metropolis, the latter of which is currently being redeveloped. On the animated side, DC Universe has Young Justice: Outsiders and Harley Quinn.

Doom Patrol is Berlanti's fourteenth ongoing series this year. The series will be written by Carver, start production this year, and will release sometime in 2019. For everything we know about DC Universe so far, read our previous coverage.
