'DOTA 2' Loot Box Odds: Know Your Luck Before You Buy

Valve, the largest company devoted to Gabe Newell, just announced the odds for loot boxes in DOTA 2 . Continuing the trend kicked off by games like Hearthstone, Rocket League and Overwatch, DOTA 2 players will now have the opportunity to know the likelihood of item drops from bundles before making a purchase.

"We've also taken this opportunity to simplify and rework the way we calculate escalating odds for this treasure and going forward," the post reads on the DOTA 2 website. "You can now click on the escalating odds arrow next to each of the rare, very rare, or extremely rare drops to see the exact odds of receiving them based on how many you've already opened."

In July, Valve included the option for players to see what's inside their loot boxes, to comply with Netherlands gaming laws.

Valve also plans a major overhaul into DOTA 2 loot boxes at some point in the future, but the post does not go into specifics about the changes.

There's nothing worse than spending 50 of your hard-earned dollars on a gacha game, only to get jack squat. Countless hours and thousands of dollars have been spent in the Newsweek offices on Hearthstone packs, Overwatch loot boxes and even an occasional Pokemon Go coin purchase. Letting players know the odds of what their purchase entails is crucial to stamping out some of the addictive proclivities of these games. Knowing there's a one percent chance you'll find a rare item might keep you from spending 500 dollars to find it.
