New York City Mayor Eric Adams made an awkward remark while speaking about the city and how it brings an array of different experiences, prompting reactions from social media users.
On Sunday, Adams sat down with Pix 11 News for an interview and was immediately asked if he could describe his year as mayor with one single word.
"New York," Adams said in response. "This is a place where every day you wake up, you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our [World] Trade Center to a person who's celebrating a new business that's opening. This is a very, very complicated city and that's why it's the greatest city on the globe." Newsweek reached out to Adams' press office via email for comment.
In September, Adams spoke about remembering the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and said, "We cannot forget them. You know, 'Never Forget' is not a bumper sticker or a slogan."
"The greatest thing about New York City and America was not what happened on 9/11, but what happened on 9/12. We got up, teachers taught, builders built, and we continued to show that we were not going to bend or break," Adams added during an interview with WCBS-TV.
Shortly after his recent remarks about a plane crashing into the Twin Towers this weekend, many social media users reacted with several questioning why the comment was made.
"I love how Eric Adams consistently wakes up, decides to let his intrusive thoughts win, and says the most out of pocket stuff that comes to his mind," @AndrewFiggy wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
X user Heben Nigatu wrote, "In New Yooooork! Concrete jungle where 9/11 could happen any day or new business where you pay let's hear it for New York."
X user @HeerJeet said, "It's too bad Eric Adams is such a terrible mayor because he's hilarious."
Similarly, X user @SpencerJMac wrote, "a very normal response from a very normal mayor. looking forward to primary season in 2024!!"
X user Tom Gara said, "There's a kind of natural instinctive artisty here that can't be taught or mimicked. You have it or you don't."
X user Mark Kastner said, "Very good. Very, very normal thing to say."
During his interview with Pix 11 News over the weekend, Adams also spoke about immigrants in New York City as he previously called on residents to ask President Joe Biden and Washington, D.C., for more help handling the influx.
"I think it's unfortunate, number one, the Republicans are not in favor of any real immigration reform. And I believe that we are not seeing that this should not be on the backs of New York City; and other cities, because now the coalition has grown," Adams said.
